Soviet-Armenian weightlifter, Olympic Champion at Seoul 1988 in the 56 kg class. Born in the village of Angeghakot in the Sisian region, he began weight training in 1977.
In 1983 Mirzoyan won both World and European Championship gold medals, setting world records in the snatch, clean & jerk and total. Over his career he set 14 world records.
He was awarded the Honoured Master of Sports of the USSR title in 1984 and Honored Coach of Armenia in 1998. Mirzoyan later served as Head Coach of the Armenian national weightlifting team and led the Weightlifting Federation of Armenia for many years.
